There is a special bond between the history of music, Naples and the Amalfi Coast, where it has become more important than anywhere else and has shaped our everyday lives since as long as anyone can remember.
Not too far away from our hotel in Praiano, Luthier Pasquale Scala has been making and restoring guitars, mandolins and medieval instruments for more than fifty years. Once he had gained all the knowledge from his father Raffaele, musician and cabinet maker, Scala has carried on this fine profession with passion, continuous research and study.
Every choice made in the construction technique and material used is determined by endless experience and knowledge obtained from spending hours listening to sound-boxes resonate or adjusting the wonderful wooden and mother-of-pearl marquetry that represent the craftsman’s signature.
Pasquale Scala’s workshop is a real atelier, where you can smell the maple, spruce pine wood or glue fumes as well sense the atmosphere of a “time taken”, the time needed for shaping artfully each one of his musical jewels.
Displayed both in Italy and all over the world, Luthier Scala’s musical instruments follow medieval, renaissance and Baroque models, often made using precious woods that are difficult to find, but are well known by local musicians who appreciate their high quality as they play them in the bands of the Amalfi Coast.
If you are passionate about music and you would like to purchase a unique and high quality instrument, visit this beautiful temple of handicraft in Praiano during your holidays on the Amalfi Coast at the Hotel Margherita of Praiano.
